The UKs National Physical Laboratory (NPL) sits at the intersection between scientific discovery and real world application as one of the world's top three National Measurement Institutes. NPL Group Leaders bring a broad skill set which is central to achieving our aim of continuing to innovate and deliver scientific excellence, often in collaboration with other organisations, whilst supporting an increasing number of customers and driving our commercial growth.

We have several Group Leader opportunities but currently a specific need in our Ultrasound & Underwater Acoustics Group. The Ultrasound and Underwater Acoustics (UUA) Group at NPL is recognised as a world leader and provides standards for measurement and calibration, and key expertise in measurement related research and development, covering the fields of medical ultrasound and underwater acoustics. You would lead and manage a team of over 20 high achieving scientific staff, and a technically diverse and complex project portfolio

We are looking for a commercially-astute individual with leadership skills who will continue to grow the Group through ensuring excellent science, customer satisfaction, developing collaborations, further improving effectiveness and business growth. The Group has purpose-built facilities, including ultrasonic measurement and testing facilities, open laboratory tanks, an acoustic pressure vessel, and an open-water site for underwater measurements. Our leading measurement scientists additionally provide tailored training courses and are able to develop bespoke systems and products to solve industrial measurement problems.

Essential Experience for Group Leaders in all disciplines:

  • Degree or equivalent ideally in an engineering or science discipline
  • Understanding and interest in, or exposure to a research/technical/engineering environment will be vital, without necessarily being a technical expert.
  • Proven people management experience supported by excellent communication skills.
  • Self-motivation and enthusiasm will be required alongside good organisation with a sense of urgency.
  • Building networks internally and externally to ensure cross-discipline team working to support growth

Areas of Focus

Leadership: Your focus will be to project and line manage, driving staff development, engagement, motivation and assessment in pursuit of delivering NPL strategy. A passionate role model, you will encourage collaboration as you balance resource management and direct cost requirements across projects and project teams to ensure technical deliverables are met.

Communication: Demonstrating impact from our innovative science is key to NPL support for the UK economy. You will both promote your team in this ongoing pursuit and facilitate cross-discipline team working and understanding to enable growth in these areas.

Project Management: In collaboration with the Project Management department you will ensure operations adhere to governance standards. You will also be responsible for management of your group revenue. Above all your projects must be delivered to time, cost and quality expectations.

Combining these skills will enable you to maximise the impact of important areas of scientific development.
