The Advanced Sequencing Science Technology Platform (STP) at the Crick provides high quality Next Generation Sequence (NGS) data from a state-of-the-art, multi-platform core facility in central London. We offer complete project management, from initial project planning and submission with the researcher, through sample preparation and sequencing, and onward to data analysis, in partnership with the Bioinformatics STP.
The Advanced Sequencing STP is experiencing an increase in the number and complexity of project requests and proposals as the research groups at the Crick and our University Partners increase their productivity through collaboration in the new Crick building. We are now looking to recruit an experienced Molecular Biologist with significant experience of working preferably within a High-Throughput Next Generation Sequencing facility with demonstrable project and laboratory management skills.
The successful candidate will have a wide-ranging, exciting and challenging remit as a key interface between the Advanced Sequencing lab team, the Bioinformatics STP and Crick based researchers. The role provides an opportunity to directly contribute to cutting-edge research in a world-class research institute.
The Advanced Sequencing STP team is currently made up of 10 experienced scientists. We have expertise in a wide range of Next Generation Sequencing applications including RNA-Seq, ChIP-Seq, single cell sequencing, genomic sequencing and capture methods. We run multiple Illumina platforms as well as Ion Torrent. We also continually evaluate new technologies and platforms, and automate some of the more laborious sample prep methods, such as the enrichment protocols offered by Agilent. We are happy to accept pre-made libraries as well as unprocessed DNA/RNA samples, all of which undergo an initial, as well as continuous, quality control assessment. The process is captured and tracked by a sophisticated Laboratory Management System (LIMS) that can provide checkpoint status reports and follow individual samples through the facility and on to analysis.
As the successful candidate will know designing, setting up and delivering successful sequencing projects is a significant undertaking in terms of both cost and effort which means that the NGS Project Manager will need excellent lab and technical skills, robust experience of managing a lab based team and first class project management skills that provide all stakeholders and customers with confidence that their project has the best chance of success in answering meaningful scientific questions.
These include but not limited to;
- End to end project management of advanced sequencing projects at the Crick including ensuring that projects are appropriately reviewed by stakeholders in the User Committee and Bioinformatics STP
- With the Advanced Sequencing STP Lead, project design and critique with Crick based researchers
- With the Advanced Sequencing STP Lead, present performance statistics to the STP's User Committee
- Laboratory management of the advanced sequencing lab and equipment including overseeing consumables budget
- Keep abreast of technology advances and research developments to ensure that the STP stays at the cutting edge of sequencing technologies
- Work with peers in the Crick and other organisations to design and oversee trials of new equipment and methods
- Work with members of other STPs and core facilities at the Crick to deliver a joined up service to Crick based research groups
- With the Advanced Sequencing STP Lead, take responsibility for and lead on laboratory health and safety matters
- With the Bioinformatics STP Lead, ensure sequencing projects are properly planned and supported with respect to data analysis and reporting
- With the Advanced Sequencing STP Lead, support annual budget planning exercises for new equipment and non-staff lab costs
- With the Advanced Sequencing STP Lead and Crick Procurement team work with suppliers to ensure cost effective use of Crick resources and budget.

KEY EXPERIENCE AND COMPETENCIES
The post holder should embody and demonstrate our core Crick values: Bold, Imaginative, Open, Dynamic and Collegial, in addition to the following:
- PhD in relevant scientific discipline or equivalent research laboratory or core facility based experience
- Recent experience of using some, ideally all, of the following techniques and instruments: RNA-Seq, ChIP-Seq, single cell sequencing, whole genome sequencing and capture methods, Clarity LIMS, Illumina and Ion Torrent sequencing platforms, lab automation such as liquid handling stations
- Proven ability to deliver successful next generation sequencing projects from idea to completed data package, either as part of a team or as an individual
- Proven ability to manage projects and laboratory operations to achieve a high level of customer satisfaction
- Proven ability to efficiently solve both technical and managerial problems
- Ability to communicate clearly and succinctly in writing and in person with a range of scientific / technical and non-scientific people at all levels of an organisation
- Ability to constructively challenge themselves and others to deliver better outcomes for all with a recognised ability to influence people to achieve a win-win or better scientific outcome
- Experience of working in a complex environment and getting things done through other people
- Performance management experience
- Design, implement and manage to key performance indicators (KPIs).
- A project management, lab management or safety qualification relevant to a research environment
