Advocacy in Barnet is an independent award-winning, charity of over 20 years standing operating throughout the London Borough of Barnet. We provide free services to vulnerable people aged 50 or over to resolve issues, concerns or queries they may have about their health and well-being. Advocacy in Barnet have a track record of successfully delivering council-funded projects as well as projects funded by grant making trusts.

We are excited to be recruiting for a new post in a new project supporting older people whilst in hospital, planning for and during the process of hospital discharge and re-settlement to ensure that people have positive and beneficial outcomes when leaving hospital. Alongside this work, you will have a portfolio of generic advocacy work supporting older people living in the community.

We're looking for a great advocate; someone with experience. We would especially welcome someone with an understanding of the issues older people face, experience of hospital discharge and dementia. You will have an understanding of relevant legislation, how health and social care services operate, be able to support a team of volunteers undertaking advocacy and ideally, hold the independent advocacy qualification or be working towards this. You will have an understanding of the principles of advocacy and of the statutory regulations and key guidance covering this work.

The post holder will recruit and support a team of unpaid advocates to deliver appropriate and accessible independent advocacy to people at the point of transition across 3 hospitals. Volunteers are key to the success of the Charity's work and as such recruits, trains and supports people to act as advocates across all of its' projects which include advocacy under the Care Act; dedicated advocacy to people affected by cancer. Advocacy in Barnet also provide user-focused advocacy and consultancy and training for our volunteers, apprentices and social work students.

You will have a strong commitment to service excellence and to supporting people to have their voice heard. You will have the ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing and the ability to facilitate the involvement of the person in the process they are going through. Ideally, you will have experience of working with volunteers. You will be able to check, challenge and negotiate with people at all levels of seniority, and have good report writing skills. You will have strong IT skills, including a working knowledge of using databases. The post-holder will be expected to be able to work on her/his own initiative as well as working as part of a team. The post is self-servicing and so required to undertake their own administration, as well as share general office duties. The job whilst based within the One Stop Shop in Grahame Park will involve extensive travelling throughout the London Borough of Barnet.
