"A 'very successful banking practice'" - Legal 500 UK

"This powerhouse enjoys a good reputation for its high quality client base and 'commercial' partners, 'professional, approach and a 'deep bench' of lawyers across the ranks, matched by respected market knowledge of the banking scene" - Chambers, UK

We are looking for an Associate to join our highly regarded and expanding Banking team in London. With the team trebling in size and the size of transactions growing exponentially over the past five years, now is an exciting time to join and play an active part in growing the practice even further. You will have the opportunity to undertake work that is varied, complex in nature, high in value and often international, all on behalf of a stellar client base which includes the "Big 5" UK banks as well as a wide range of other lenders and borrowers.

The practice

With Banking specialists based across our London, Reading and Bristol offices, our experience covers everything from setting up new entrants in the high-street banking market, through lending transactions to complex cross-border restructurings. Our clients include European and US banks and all the main UK clearing banks. We hold extensive panel positions across these clients and regularly work on club deals between them. We also act for a wide range of alternate lenders (financial institutions (UK and overseas), funds (debt or otherwise), peer to peer platforms and asset finance houses) and are developing our borrower client base, through close work with our colleagues in the other service lines within OC.

The sector based approach of the firm allows us to work across many different sectors and allows the junior members of the team to develop skills in several disciplines rather than needing to specialise early in their careers. The department offers a range of opportunities covering real estate finance, corporate and acquisition finance, leveraged finance, financial institutions and regulated financings, asset finance and project finance. We also have a leading technology venture/growth lending practice acting principally for lenders but also equity sponsors and borrowers. The ever-increasing footprint of the firm is allowing us to develop our cross-border offering and in addition to the OC overseas offices, we have an excellent network of best friend firms in the jurisdictions where we do not have an office of our own.

Unusually with such a diverse range of opportunities, the supervision and development of the junior members of the team is still central to how we work and while associates are encouraged to take on as much responsibility on a transaction as they feel comfortable to, there is senior support available both on the specific transaction in question and also on an ad hoc basis.

The team

The London-based team of 15 is led by Chambers-rated Akmal Ghauri, Partner and the department is made up of over 30 lawyers in total across the three UK offices.

The work

Recent work highlights include:

Acted for Student Castle in the refinancing of their development facilities.
Acted as lead counsel to the borrower on a multi-jurisdictional, cross-collateralised Euro term facility lent by German bank, Aareal Bank AG, to a IDI Gazeley group company, to fund the acquisition of a portfolio of French warehouse and logistics properties.
Acted for The Royal Bank of Scotland plc as agent on the financing of the ISG Group across nine jurisdictions.
Advised Santander UK plc on the financing of the development of the Imperial College campus.
Acted for Lloyds Bank plc as agent to the senior lenders (senior debt GBP84,150,000) on a structured corporate arrangement involving syndicated mezzanine and junior debt pieces
Advised Eversholt Rail Group as financier of a GBP361,000,000 fleet of new-build Hitachi express trains for First Great Western.
Advised Investec in relation to the provision of senior term debt and an ancillary inventory finance facility, in connection with the acquisition of Maplin Electronics by private equity house, Rutland Partners.

Technical skills and experience

You will have knowledge and experience across a broad base of banking matters which will have been gained at a well-respected City or National firm. Due to the nature of the work and the structure of the team, we are looking to a 1+ years' qualified lawyer, although we will consider candidates with more or less experience.

Your career development

Like all our lawyers, you will benefit from our multi-award winning career development programme. At each stage of your career this provides you with:

clear expectations of your role and what it takes to progress;
high quality clients and work, with early responsibility and client exposure;
thorough assessment and individual feedback from a range of experienced colleagues;
robust technical training with early skills based development, increasingly tailored to you; and
reward for your contribution, progression and potential, rather than PQE or tenure.

Salary and benefits

We offer competitive salaries and generous benefits.
