Commissioning Editor

Based out of our Kings Cross, London Campus


The Acquisitions Editor is responsible for the acquisition and the ongoing management of a portfolio of books/eBooks covering web development and related areas. Titles acquired by the Acquisitions Editor should be of consistently high quality, in line with the company's reputation as a high-quality publisher of computing, IT, business, and technical works. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Managing a book portfolio of approximately 20-30 titles per year, potentially to include development of videos in the field for which he or she is responsible
  • Pursuing an active and efficient acquisitions strategy through correspondence, required meetings/trips, telephone, consultations with advisors
  • Preparing proposals for publication ensuring they adhere to house styles; negotiating and executing publishing contracts, agreeing realistic schedules and planning for evenly-spread annual publications
  • Maintaining and developing a network of tech reviewers and advisors
  • Maintaining communication with marketing, promotion and production concerning individual projects as well as general questions of mutual interest
  • Maintaining communication and a strong working relationship with editorial counterparts in the US, the UK and India about specific immediate questions as well as long???term strategy questions
  • Developing guidelines and maintaining reporting systems in order to implement publishing plans
  • Reviewing and discussing new projects and plans with editorial colleagues, particularly in overlapping areas
  • Approximately 20%???30% travel requiring strong initiative and independent functioning
  • Any other duties as required by manager


  • BA or equivalent
  • Experience as an acquisitions editor or related editorial/publishing experience
  • Strong affinity with/a natural interest in the tech industry (web development experience desired)
  • Excellent interpersonal, organisational and communication skills
  • Must be able to work to strict deadlines and ensure delivery from multiple teams
  • Must be willing and able to travel to conferences and events
