Paiwand is a grassroots refugee organisation that was set up by a group of Afghan refugees in 2002. In 2010 we opened our doors to refugees, asylum seekers and vulnerable migrants from all over the world, and currently support over 2000 children, young people and adults per year. We aim to benefit refugee communities in the UK through reducing poverty, advancing education and relieving suffering through a number of services including advocacy, social support, accommodation and more.

The Role

This is a fantastic opportunity to develop and advance our Employability Programme, with opportunities for innovation and creativity. We wish to improve the lives and prospects of refugees and asylum seekers aged 17-24, including unaccompanied minors and care-leavers. The young men and women will come from all communities and their time spent in the UK will be varied. They face numerous challenges adjusting to life in the UK, building a future for themselves and being part of their new community. These issues include language barriers and cultural differences, low understanding of the system, lack of friends and family support, bullying and vulnerability to negative influences.

The role will include working within the Family Services department at Paiwand, ensuring young people are being supported holistically. It will also involve working with partners such as local businesses, charities and training providers. Referrals may come from social services, education providers and support services as well as through collaborative working with a local college, so the ideal candidate must have excellent communication and partnership liaison skills.

When enrolled in the Employability Programme young people will have the option of being matched with a volunteer mentor as their Pathway Advisor, who will support them to develop basic job skills. They will then be supported to access good quality work experience, insight tours around work environments, workshops and events. Eventually they will be equipped with the skills and confidence to apply for paid employment, and/or qualifications (such as apprenticeships or leadership). Throughout, the Employability Programme Manager will provide sustained advice and guidance and have the privilege to watch the young people develop and thrive.

The successful candidate will also:

?? Have experience supporting vulnerable or hard to reach young people
?? Be a confident, diligent and organised project manager
?? Have experience of recruiting, training and supervising volunteers
?? Have a flexible working style and be able to deliver both 1:1 and group sessions
?? Be courageous in providing safe and high quality work experiences
?? Be aware of the challenges and structural barriers faced by young refugees
