Our expertise and original research have benefited UK citizens and the UK economy for over a century.

A highly capable senior electronics engineer is needed to work for the Instruments group to design and build instruments ranging from prototypes to production builds. You will become involved in a wide range of projects, as part of a business unit which develops commercial instruments arising from research and innovation coming from NPL's scientists.

Past examples of typical electronics requirements include, for example: low noise and high accuracy analogue systems, improving accuracy of electronics for optical clocks, development of wireless and fibre based communication systems.
You will be provided the opportunity for training courses for technical and professional skills.

Your role will involve:

  • Designing circuits and electronics systems to meet a specification defined by a project
  • Taking designs and prototypes created by someone else and translating them into robust circuits, or sub-systems, or full products
  • Modelling and simulation supporting complex electronic system implementations
  • Taking design responsibility for sub-systems which must be integrated into systems
  • Providing technical input and review to a variety of projects across the business

  • Good degree in Electronics or Physics or equivalent. Candidates without degrees will be considered if they can prove equivalent experience in industry.
  • Proven relevant professional experience. The quality of the experience is what matters most.
  • Experience with CAD software (circuit design and PCB layout and manufacture)
  • Excellent capability with regard to digital and analogue, EMC, and RF circuit design principles
  • Experience integrating electronics into mechatronics, instruments, and enclosures
  • An inquiring mind with good interpersonal skills who can communicate effectively
  • Ability to communicate with engineers and scientists and translate their requirements into practical solutions
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, managing your time according to priorities
  • Ability to work within a robust product development process

Desirable skills:

  • Systems engineering experience
  • Embedded software experience, microcontrollers
  • Experience creating robust electronics systems suitable for low volume production which are reliable and maintainable
