The department

Our team of business services staff play a significant role in the success of Dentons, and we recruit staff into a wide variety of areas. Here, we look for focused, flexible individuals from a variety of backgrounds who are team players. Previous experience within the legal sector is not essential. We want to give everyone the opportunity to develop his or her potential fully and, therefore, provide support, training and encouragement to members of staff at all levels.

Purpose of role

To support the Global Co-Heads of Conflicts to advise, design and implement effective controls and policies to ensure the firm and its staff comply with applicable conflict laws, regulations, professional conduct rules and best practice in relation to new business intake processes, legal conflicts and commercial/business conflict identification and resolution. To develop and manage the Global Conflicts Team responsible for the firm's global conflict check procedures.

Responsibilities

Management responsibilities

Day to day responsibility for managing the Global Conflicts Team, ensuring the team works efficiently and effectively to review and clear conflicts as quickly as possible.
Managing, developing and improving an effective conflict clearance procedure and policy.
Allocating work among Conflicts Team members (assign and re-assign NBI requests, whether by "number" or practice area as appropriate).
Dealing with employee related issues (appraisals, holiday, hiring new members with Global Head approvals).
Ensuring members of the Global Conflict Team communicate effectively with all stakeholders in the business as well as in the global team and offer proactive, timely and useful assistance
Training new members of the team on all relevant new business intake system and policies and procedures.
Maintaining statistical information on progress of projects as well as monthly statistics on number of requests processed by the department.
Assist with department-related technology initiatives, with particular focus on planning, development of business rules and rollout of new applications.

To work with Global Heads (AML/CDD & Conflicts) as well as the Global Chief Legal Officer to support all regional risk and compliance teams.

Conflicts Responsibilities

Handle complex conflict of interest clearances and resolution of commercial or business issues.
Managing the review and approval of conflict clearances as required and facilitate escalation and resolution on the more complex matters, raising to the Global Co-Heads as necessary.
Advising on a wide range of Conflict and risk related queries from Partners and Fee Earners.
Keeping up-to-date with new and amended compliance laws worldwide relating to Conflicts.
Conduct audits, co-ordinating remediation and recommending changes of policy.
Providing a 'concierge' service to partners at the firm by liaising with clients directly on Conflicts issues, either in person, on the phone or in writing.
Managing and advising on policies for working together arrangements with other verein members.
Developing and delivering conflicts training to the global conflicts team, fee earners, trainees and support staff.
Assists on projects supporting the Global Heads (AML/CDD & Conflicts) as well as the Global Chief Legal Officer.
Other such tasks, all under the direct supervision of, and reporting to, the Global Co-Heads of Conflicts.

Required experience, skills and attributes

Technical Skills

Lawyer in good standing with relevant regulatory body or bar association.
Previous supervisory/lead role in a conflicts/intake position preferably with a large international law firm.

Prior experience analyzing and resolving conflicts of interest and managing confidential information issues.
An understanding of conflict checking products is desirable.
Ability to analyze medium to high difficulty legal issues, producing accurate and reasoned opinions on a range of regulatory issues.
Able to critically review, update and amend firm policies and procedures in plain English.
Knowledge and understanding of conflicts rules and related professional responsibility requirements across the firm's key locations.

Ability to identify areas of current business process steps which could be enhanced and/or streamlined to become more efficient and add value to our end customers work product.
Ability to present oral and written communications to internal and external customers.
Ability to address sensitive and confidential issues with tact as well as build and maintain effective working relationships within the department.
Ability to take direction and follow through to completion with minimal supervision.
Ability to work in conjunction with the Global Co-Heads of Conflicts and other team members to provide 24/7 coverage w/r/t working in an environment that supports customers in various time zones.
Able to demonstrate advanced research and drafting skills.
Able to critically review, update and amend policies, procedures and precedents for the firm in plain English with minimal supervision, consulting with stakeholders where appropriate.
Able to identify and resolve deficiencies and gaps in existing policies, procedures and precedents.
Analyse issues and draw conclusions, producing accurate and reasoned opinions on a range of regulatory issues.
Able to communicate persuasively and effectively by telephone, in writing and in person and deal with situations of conflict effectively, professionally and sensitively.
Detailed working knowledge and understanding of the rules and regulations that apply to law firms.
An understanding of Elite and the billing processes.
PC literate with a good working knowledge of MS Office, e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
Able to keep all general administration up-to-date and under control.

Language Capabilities

We are a truly global law firm and as such, always welcome hearing from those with foreign language capabilities. In light of our recent combination, Mandarin language fluency would be particularly advantageous given that China is now core to our strategy.
