Head of Personal Injury Claims - About the job
To oversee the performance of Personal Injury Claims in order to deliver effective management of spend and case reserving. The jobholder will add value to the business through analysis and knowledge-sharing, contributing insight to the Underwriting, Actuarial and Finance functions.

Head of Personal Injury Claims - Core Duties
Oversee the performance of Personal Injury Claims to deliver effective management of spend appropriate to industry benchmarks and agreed target, within a business model where the handling of claims is delegated to claim handling functions through separate reporting lines.
Ensure effective management of case reserving in accordance with the company's published reserving policy. Contribute to review of reserving philosophy and technical reserve allocation, ensuring that Actuaries are provided with good understanding of working practices and developments in the Claims function.
Analyse, draft reports and respond to financial performance metrics ensuring granular understanding of underlying developments, deploying actions both remedial and opportunistic. Provide insight to financial performance of the portfolio to Underwriting, Actuarial and Finance, with proactive diagnosis of trends and areas for improvement.
Develop strategies based on comprehensive understanding of the market and anticipation of legal developments in order to take opportunities and mitigate risks in support of the above purposes. Initiate indemnity improvement and operational effectiveness initiatives with sound business cases, tracking the post implementation performance of these.
Champion the company in the market and the Claims function internally on Personal Injury matters and play an influential role in both market bodies and internal forums.

Head of Personal Injury Claims - Key Characteristics
Ensure that robust processes are in place to ensure compliance with internal and external standards, regulatory and legal requirements.
Work effectively through the Heads of Damage, Large Loss, Counter Fraud and Claims Operations to provide seamless delivery of objectives in the interests of "the whole system". Work the matrix across the company so that the claim handling functions effectively deliver the processes which drive the optimal financial performance.
Provide full scope and over-view on complaints originating from Personal Injury.
Influence other company functions in so far as the optimum outcomes for Personal Injury are concerned, both in a technical advisory and business proposition or process capacity.
Drive and implement business improvement initiatives and the development of Motor claims handling processes to ensure Claims costs are kept in line with Industry benchmarks and agreed targets.

Product Knowledge
Understanding of the business portfolio and knowledge of all products and classes of business.
Full knowledge of Service Provider product offerings.

Technical knowledge
Understanding of RTA, Contractual obligations, Article 75, MoJ / LASPO and key case law.
Good technical knowledge in bodily injury assessment and all associated special damages to include future losses, Smith vs. Manchester/disadvantage and Ogden Tables.
Good technical knowledge in areas of civil judiciary and litigation to include full MoJ and CPR procedures, LASPO and related developments.
Full knowledge of First and Third Party in general to understand interdependencies.
Awareness of issues affecting large and catastrophic losses and PPO claim settlements.
Numeracy and ability to analyse data, diagnosing underlying movements and trends. Familiarity with overall insurance financial reporting.
Ability to draft reports for senior audiences.
Ability to relate and sell performance to staff at all levels.
Management of Personal Injury functions for a minimum of 5 years.
Strong knowledge of or qualification in civil law as it applies to RTA.
