About Corporate Relations

The Corporate Relations function is made up of a number of specialist teams within the fields of Corporate Communications, Group Brand, Marketing & Sponsorship, Government Relations & Public Policy, Citizenship & Reputation, Events Management and the Chief of Staff to the CEO Office. Its purpose is to win the hearts and minds of our stakeholders both internally and externally by becoming the most admired brand, epitomising our purpose and values, creating advocacy and inspiring our people.

Overall purpose of role:

The role reports to Director, Global Head of Employee Programmes and will:
  • Act as the central Citizenship business partner to provide support, guidance and advice for functions Citizenship activity and for the COO-embedded Citizenship resource, as required
  • Ensure consistent understanding, buy-in and activation of the group-wide Citizenship strategy in the Service Company
  • Partner with the BUs and functions, lead the development and effective delivery of existing and new group-wide initiatives to engage colleagues in the Shared Growth Plan, including effective and innovative colleague opportunities to deliver social, business and talent development benefits
  • Partner with HR to input to the design and delivery of colleague learning about Citizenship and initiatives to support the talent development agenda

Key Accountabilities

Central Citizenship business partner for Functions
  • Proactive senior stakeholder management across the Functions to ensure alignment with the strategy and execution plan
  • Develop and lead implementation of the group-wide strategy to drive participation, advocacy and talent development among leaders and colleagues across the Shared Growth Ambition
  • Develop innovative, aligned Citizenship participation opportunities, including skills-based volunteering propositions, that maximise social and business impact and deliver against personal development objectives
  • Deliver engagement plan with targeted groups of colleagues, including leaders, ambassadors and scale colleague population
  • Oversight of the Citizenship Ambassador strategy, partnering with Head of Citizenship for businesses /functions to execute the delivery of the programmes

Lead the development of innovative and impactful programme engagement proposition
  • Lead development and effective delivery of existing and new initiatives to engage colleagues in the Shared Growth Ambition
  • Lead the development of innovative Citizenship participation opportunities that deliver social and business benefits that integrate and compliment with Group wide existing initiatives

Partner with HR to support design and delivery of Citizenship learning opportunities
  • In partnership with HR, design and deliver Citizenship initiatives which support the learning and development agenda

Leadership and team development
  • Lea d and empower the team, fostering coordination and collaboration across all regions/BUs. Work with team to develop a strong understanding of the business divisions and their priorities as they relate to team activity
  • Carry out line management, performance and talent management (including succession planning), and personal development of 1 team member, in line with internal process as well as the strategic direction of the team
  • Embed Purpose, Values and Behaviours across the organisation by acting as a Values role model for the team
  • Develop consistent and rigorous standards for measuring success and share these outcomes with the team
  • Ensure that all colleagues are clear in decision-making and execution responsibilities
  • Support the recruitment and development of a world class team and ensure a robust and comprehensive induction programme, as required
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues to help create a highly effective function, demonstrating 'one team' behaviours and fostering a positive working environment
  • Provide exceptional stakeholder support that builds trust in the working relationship, confidence in our expertise, and a positive reputation for the wider function
  • Highlight opportunities to proactively manage Barclays reputation, identifying potential issues and working with the appropriate stakeholders to manage requirements

Risk and Control Objective:

All Barclays colleagues have to ensure that all activities and duties are carried out in full compliance with regulatory requirements, Enterprise Wide Risk Management Framework and internal Barclays Policies and Policy Standards

Person specification

Qualifications and education
  • Bachelor's degree required; MBA preferred
  • Extensive professional experience (10+ years); evidence within a financial services organization; preferred demonstrable experience in Citizenship and/or Communications in a global organization

Skills and knowledge

Business and Technical
  • Demonstrable commercial acumen and impressive business knowledge; understanding Barclays strategy and organisational structures, role of the Service Co/Functions/COO, business leadership teams and strategic priorities
  • A strong operator and politically astute leader with experience and success in setting clear priorities, executing well and partnering effectively
  • Experience managing senior stakeholders: comfortable at all levels of interaction - challenging effectively and becoming a true partner for Citizenship
  • Demonstrable ability to effectively manage a culturally-diverse stakeholder group (internally and externally), harmonising different objectives in order to bring significant contribution to the business
  • Effective and compelling communicator, able to distill and prioritise information to articulate clear and relevant messaging
  • Ability to operate as an effective tactical as well as strategic thinker. Experience of selling a bigger vision to drive brand value; yet results-oriented with a strong attention to detail
  • Strong strategic and business planning skills. Keen analytic and problem-solving skills, and sound judgement, to support and enable effective decision-making
  • Entrepreneurial, innovative and a consummate team player.

  • Proven communication and coalition-building skills with an ability to balance, negotiate and work with a variety of internal and external stakeholders across businesses and geographies to achieve buy-in to strategy, programmes and activity
  • A skilled presenter, able to represent Barclays as required
  • Robust networker, both internally and externally
