UK Power Networks Services is the non-regulated part of UK Power Networks.

This team develops, delivers and manages safe, sustainable and profitable high voltage electrical and multi-utility networks for owners of major infrastructure. UKPNS work with a range of high profile clients such as Heathrow Airport Limited, Stansted Airport Limited, GIP (London Gatwick Airport), High Speed 1, Network Rail, London Underground, Ministry of Defence, Docklands Light Railway, and Canary Wharf.

Job Purpose:

A vacancy currently exists for a Jointers Mate to work with the Project Team in Aldershot and Salisbury Plain to deliver new connection work, diversions, fault location and repair in addition to future lifecycle maintenance and construction activities associated with electrical distribution equipment and infrastructure. A key aspect of the role is to facilitate, and be part of, the construction process for the hand-over of new electrical assets provided under the new ABP contract. Further, the role requires the Jointers Mate to support the delivery of operational safety and the response to supply failures and other electrical incidents.

Job Nature and Scope:

Project Allenby Connaught is a 35-year contract with the Ministry of Defence to upgrade operate, and complete the life cycle maintenance of electrical utility assets, together with a capital expenditure programme for the supply of infrastructure and connections to new and refurbished accommodation, dining, training blocks and sports facilities. Additional contract works have just been negotiated and secured to provide further new infrastructure under the Army basing programme. Additional resource is now required to deliver the proposed works successfully.

Although based at the site above and principally working on the Allenby Project the candidate will be expected to develop their skills and authorisations to be able to work on any of the projects within UKPN Services

- The successful candidate maybe be required to participate in a stand-by rota as part of a team to provide emergency response outside of normal working hours.

Principle accountabilities:

- Observe all work being carried out on live LV apparatus with exposed conductors.
- Ensure safe use of equipment in line with health & safety procedures and network standards specifically that colleagues on site are also wearing the relevant PPE. (This forms part of the duty of care of all operational staff under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974).

- To deter other third party contractors and members of the public distracting staff while working on live equipment, and ensure 'Do Not Disturb' signs are prominently displayed appropriately and at all times whilst live electrical work is in progress.
- Set equipment up for the Jointer/Fitter including preparation of work, laying out tools and equipment for a task and equipping the vehicle to enable jobs to be carried out.
- Assists the Jointer/Fitter when he/she carries out work on live 240/415v apparatus, conductors or equipment as required in accordance with appropriate safety procedures.

- Use appropriate IT equipment such as tough pad - an electronic job issuing system.
- Assist the Jointer/Fitter with all aspects of maintaining and inspecting the LV and HV network.
- Supports the Jointer/Fitter in terms of uses own judgement to undertake risk assessment of a job in terms of feasibility, safety, knowledge of tools and equipment and timeliness and liaise with the project team as and when appropriate.

- The post holder undertakes a system emergency storm role where he/she carries out in accordance with network standards and safety requirements.
- Complete out of hours safety/emergency response (Standby) as and when required.

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications and Experience:

The following skills and attributes are important to this role:

- Educated to GCSE level or equivalent.
- Knowledge of electrical distribution an advantage.
- Willingness to learn on the job.
- An understanding of the Electricity at Work Act.
- Trained in First Aid.
- Awareness of the policies relating to Health & Safety.
- Full UK driving licence required.
- Integrates well in a team and actively promotes good team work.
- Applicants must be able to achieve full Ministry of Defence Security Clearance.
- Ability to work and integrate as part of a small team committed to the successful delivery of a high profile project.
- Able to work under pressure.

- Jobs are signed off by completion of task instructions and are undertaken safely to quality, cost and time and completed to the correct specification and to guaranteed service standards.
- Feedback from colleagues, customers and other organisations as well as implementation of work activity demonstrate that policies and procedures are understood and successfully undertaken by the post holder.
- Obtain a City & Guilds 2339 (formally 2322) qualification and train to become a craftsperson
