Organisational Context Vision for a Nation (VFAN) is an award-winning UK charity. It is improving the quality of life for those with poor vision by transforming access to eye care services. This is helping people to fully contribute socially and economically to their communities. Over the last 5 years with the support of our founder, philanthropist James Chen, together with funding from DFID, USAID and UBS Optimus Foundation we have transformed eye care in Rwanda. Over the next 5 years VFAN has exciting plans to expand and we are growing our programmes and our team. We will be establishing new projects in Africa and Asia, while exploring partnerships with global corporations to develop eye care programmes for their staff and customers. We will also be harnessing the power of technology - by working with entrepreneurs, tech firms and innovators so that the challenge of poor vision can be addressed quickly and effectively. We need great people to help us on this journey. You don't need to have a public health, eye care or charity sector background to work with us. We need our people to be self-starters, risk takers, innovators and able to get on and work with people from many cultures and backgrounds. Job Purpose VFAN seeks a highly dynamic individual to lead the design, development and delivery of a new Fundraising and Partnership Strategy that will help us provide eye care in multiple low- and middle- income countries and contexts. We seek candidates with an exceptional track record of taking new ideas and innovations to scale and of developing partnerships with major development institutions, foundations and corporations. This is an unusual and exciting role that will require a unique individual with exceptional experience of securing innovation funding. The jobholder will work closely with the CEO to secure funding for new programmes. This will include winning funding from major institutional development donors and building partnerships with global corporations, academic institutions, governments and NGOs working in our sector. We also wish to explore public-private partnerships and to harness technologies such as smartphone-based vision screening. The jobholder will need to explore innovative financing methods such as development impact bonds, crowdfunding and results-based financing. S/he will report to VFAN's CEO. The role is based in London and will involve extensive global travel. Key Responsibilities Develop a Fundraising Strategy that will enable VFAN to scale its work to multiple new countries beyond Rwanda. We envisage the Strategy will include institutional development donors, trusts, foundations, high net worth individuals and innovative corporate partnerships. Develop and implement Action Plans for each target identified in the Fundraising Strategy. Develop a Case for Support and Theory of Change for VFAN's scale-up and expansion. This will include collaborative work on developing the evidence base for our results and impact. Develop proposals for innovative financing based grant applications. These could include Development Impact Bonds, crowd-funding and payment-for-results grants. Fulfil all reporting requirements for new and existing donors. Support the CEO in creating a corporate culture of individual fundraising within VFAN. Member of the Senior Management Team with a reporting role at Board meetings. Annual fundraising targets will be agreed with the CEO and are expected to be in the region of GBP400,000 for 2018, GBP700,000 for 2019 and GBP1.5m for 2020. Competencies Delivering Results: Dynamic self-starter able to work independently within a small entrepreneurial team. At the outset, the jobholder will not have any support staff or direct reports and will be expected to build partnerships, write applications and deliver results independently. Communicating and Influencing: First class communication, influencing, negotiation and presentation skills - and the ability to make the case effectively both face-to-face and in writing to a range of audiences. Strategic Thinking and Planner: Experience of organisational strategic planning and development of fundraising strategy. Time Management: Ability to work under pressure and meet strict deadlines. Collaborative: Able to work closely within a small team in the UK and overseas. Cultural Sensitivity: Adaptable and sensitive to work in different cultural contexts. Leadership and Management: Leading by example, setting direction and supporting colleagues. Qualifications Education Essential: University degree level, Computer literate (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Desirable: MBA or Masters in Finance, experience of international development. Experience Essential Proven success in delivering major fundraising income against demanding targets from institutional donors, trusts, foundations, corporates and high net worth individuals. Excellent writing skills to produce a range of documents including persuasive funding applications, internal documents, board papers and reports to donors. Working with senior leaders in the public, private and not for profit sectors. Proficiency in all MS Office applications. Desirable Experience of developing and delivering highly innovative and new approaches to fundraising. Supporting innovative and disruptive solutions to entrenched and under prioritised development problems. Experience of working with trustees and senior volunteers and the credibility to deal with people and challenges at a high level. Experience of working SMEs or NGOs.
