Research Grants Manager
JOB TITLE: Research Grants Manager SALARY: c GBP38-40,000 (based on experience) CONTRACT: 12 month contract (with potential to extend) RESPONSIBLE TO: Scientific Director LOCATION: London (Office based) About the Charity Children with Cancer UK is the leading national children's charity dedicated to the fight against childhood cancer. Our aims are to determine the causes, find cures, improve treatments and provide care for children with cancer. Our work started with a promise We were founded in 1988 following the death of 14-year old Paul O'Gorman to leukaemia and, just nine months later, his sister Jean, also to cancer. Before his death Paul's parents promised to help other children with leukaemia and, today, we fund life-saving research into childhood leukaemia as well as all other forms of other childhood cancers. • We fund life-saving research to improve our understanding of childhood cancer and to find safer, more effective treatments for all young patients. • We fund innovative welfare projects to help children and families in their fight against childhood cancer. • We campaign and raise awareness of childhood cancer, to protect more children and give more young cancer patients a brighter future. Background Information The Charity is the major UK cancer charity for children and young adults up to 24 years of age. It currently spends in the order of GBP5M annually funding leading-edge scientific and medical research. This includes better treatments that are less toxic and have fewer long-term adverse side effects, and investigating causal mechanisms including environmental and life-style factors that have been associated with cancer incidence. We are investing heavily in research in Precision Medicine. The Scientific and Medical Directors in conjunction with the Trustees set the overall scientific and medical priorities of the Charity. The Scientific Advisory Panel (SAP) then develops the remit and time-scale of the grant call in collaboration with Scientific and Medical Directors. The Research Grants Manager (RGM) is responsible for our on-going grants administration including budgets, contracts, reporting as well as over-seeing the application, peer-review and assessment processes during our regular grant-giving rounds. The RGM also coordinates our calls for research proposals on an annual basis. This consists of the launch and administration of new calls for grant applications, fellowships calls and our brain tumour and other specialist initiatives. The RGM also provides summary details of our research programme for our publicity and other purposes and provides input into other initiatives at the Charity.
