Senior Business Development Manager
Our Business Development Team, here at CMS, is looking for experienced professionals to them at this exciting time. About the role To lead and support the integrated global practice & sector group ["the group"] comprising the LAIE (Litigation, Arbitration, Insurance and Employment) and TMIC (Technology, Media, IP and Competition) practice groups and the lifesciences & healthcare and TMT sectors on the planning and implementation of all business development (BD) initiatives related to the group in close coordination with the global practice group and sector marketing team, with a specific focus on the LAIE and TMIC practice groups. Key responsibilities: - Team management - To manage, oversee and provide guidance to the BD managers in the group, including responsibility for appraisals and training. - Business planning & Budgeting - To support the annual business planning and budgeting process for the group, ensuring that potential BD activities are appropriately prioritised, budget is requested, and approved activities are implemented to budget. - BD infrastructure - To develop and maintain a BD infrastructure for the group, including a complete set of standard pitch content for the group and each sub-group in the format specified by the pitch team; clearly defined client mailing lists for each group and/or sub-group; brochures, flyers and inserts relating to the group; a calendar of upcoming events for the group; and a list of target clients of the group. - Pitching - To support pitches and capability statements which the group leads on, where necessary collaborating with other practice groups or sectors, or new business team resources. To monitor the outcome of pitches and record results on the firm's pitch database. To conduct pitch reviews as necessary. - Campaigns - To lead on the development and execution of marketing and thought leadership campaigns for the group aligned to the integrated campaign plan for the firm as a whole. - Events / Spotlight Series - To contribute to a series of seminars in the UK and elsewhere that are branded as being part of the CMS Spotlight Series. To support the execution of all seminars and events (with the help of secretaries). - Client targeting - To support activities aimed at targeting potential clients or further developing existing clients of the group, working with the London-based New Business and Client Services team as appropriate. - Communications / PR - Working with the Heads of Communications and Brand & Sector Communications, to help the group differentiate in the market through identifying, developing and then promoting a meaningful proposition. - Directory and award submissions - To ensure that directory and awards submissions in the group are completed on time and reflect the correct messaging about CMS and our overall strategy. - To develop and maintain effective working relations with key individuals across the firm, particularly the group's fee earners and business services team. - To liaise with the CMS Legal Business Development team in Frankfurt as necessary to ensure alignment with CMS-wide activities and strategies. - To support other initiatives and activities as requested by the Head of Practice Group and Sector Marketing from time to time. About you Technical Competence Has significant Business Development and Marketing experience gained in a professional services environment. Has experience in all aspects of Business Development and Marketing, including pitching, practice group and sector marketing, client targeting and campaigns. Is experienced in budgeting and budget management. Possesses excellent oral and written communications skills. Demonstrates an understanding of the IT packages/systems necessary to perform the role. Has a demonstrated ability to build strong working relationships with partners and staff at all levels within the firm and with external vendors. Analytical skills Grasps, retains and analyses complex information and concepts; pays good attention to detail. Has the ability to present complex information and concepts in a clear and concise manner. Possesses strong numerical skills. Communication style and approach Demonstrates excellent listening skills and checks for understanding wherever necessary. Responds to professional environment, presenting consistently professional verbal and non-verbal behaviour with clients and colleagues. Management Experience of managing small teams ensuring team members perform effectively and contribute to the work of the team as a whole. Demonstrates ability to plan and organise time; works to given timeframes and balances work well to meet goals and objectives. Identifies issues, risks and conflicts and asks for assistance and/or delegates appropriately when required in a timely and constructive manner. Adheres to, and seeks to improve established processes and procedures, where appropriate.
