About Big Society Capital

Big Society Capital (BSC) was established in 2012 by its founding Chair, Sir Ronald Cohen (Founder of Apax Partners) with £600m of investment from dormant bank accounts and four high street banks.

BSC is a globally unique organisation. Set up as an independent financial institution with a mission to develop a sustainable social investment market in the UK, so that charities and social enterprises can grow their positive impact on society. We invest to increase access to social investment for charities and social enterprises so they can continue to improve the lives of vulnerable and disadvantaged people in the UK.

As an investor, BSC invests as a wholesaler, deploying capital through social investment funds and other social investment intermediaries alongside co-investors. To date, BSC has managed its internal multi-asset fund of funds. As at end of Q2 2017, it has committed £355m of its own capital (£1bn in total inclusive of match investment capital).

BSC also performs a “market championing” function by building awareness and understanding of social investment with mission led investees and social investors. It has played a major role in improving the enterprise, investor and policy environment in which social investments are made.

However, Big Society Capital's task is still just beginning. As interest in impact investment has grown amongst investors, there is a real opportunity to demonstrate how mission aligned capital can be successful in delivering long term impact in areas of greatest need.

BSC defines social investment as an investment where both investors and investees intends to make a positive social impact.

Key purpose of role

The Investor Relations Director will principally lead on identifying, building and developing relationships with a view to raising external capital from institutional investors. This may be from Defined Contribution (DC) Pension Scheme Investment Platforms or Corporate Pension Schemes who have shown an interest in our development of a Social Pension product in the UK. As well as other institutional investors such as foundations through their existing investment managers. This role is to raise capital from those who are either motivated to offer a social investment product to their clients or wish to have an investment allocation to a genuinely high social impact fund of fund.

Beyond BSC's own capital raising, the role will lead on our ambition to build a private placement function for social investment funds and intermediaries seeded by BSC.

Key Responsibilities

•             Work with internal stakeholders to lead and build a capital raising function

•             Lead on BSC's management of investor mandates that deliver high social impact in the UK

•             Realise BSC's ambition to work with partners and launch the UK's first Social Pension product

 

•             Identify and manage the sales process with relevant institutional investors

•             Raise awareness of social investment and differentiate social investment from the broader impact investment industry

 

•             Work with investment teams to design products that address some of the greatest social challenges in the UK

 

•             Help design tools that best communicate to investors the activities of BSC and the social and financial returns being achieved by its investments

 

•             Explore building a private placement function for social investment intermediaries

•             Work collaboratively with all colleagues, in particularly with investment and investor engagement teams

Essential

 

Experience

  • Senior institutional sales or business development experience in private markets
  • Proven and quantifiable track record in capital raising
  • Established relationships with institutional investors
  • Highly commercial with proven ability to leverage personal network of institutional investors

Desirable

  • Demonstrable interest in the social or impact investment either in a personal or professional capacity
  • Knowledge of product development
  • Knowledge of regulatory frameworks

  • Familiarity with wide range of financial instruments (real assets, private debt, private equity and venture capital)
