The Infrastructure Design Group - 'Building and Civils ' (IDG B&C)is Network Rail's internal design consultancy originally created in 2010 and consolidated in 2016 and is expanding rapidly. IDG Building &Civils is a multidisciplinary team which, together with the signalling, track / permanent way, and the electrification and plant design groups, form part of the Infrastructure Design Group (IDG) within Network Rail, numbering more than 550 technical staff.

Brief Description

This is an exciting opportunity to be part of the development and growth of a multi-disciplinary building and engineering team. The project work is varied and involves scheme designs that affect the operational railway the public urban realm and the built environment. Our current portfolio includes design and assessment of bridges, retaining walls, ancillary structures, foundations design and assessment of earthworks. We also carry out option development for major rail infrastructure projects in feasibility stages and help develop Network Rail's standard design catalogue. We work alongside geotechnical, structural, buildings and architectural designers and other Integrated Design Teams within Network Rail in a collaborative and multi-disciplinary environment.

About the role (External)

Working within a multi-disciplinary team, you will be responsible for the engineering development of project proposals from clarification of the remit to project completion. Including developing the engineering requirements which best satisfies the business case and client needs.
1. To aid the Programme manager and Geotechnical Team Leader manage the resources in the Geotechnical Team to deliver the agreed outcomes for geotechnical schemes.
2. Manage the development of a remit so it proposal properly describes the engineering requirements, scope, possibilities and operational performance targets of the project. Monitor and value manage the business and technical remit and thereby optimise the business case.
3. To manage designs, reports, specifications, drawing preparation and other deliverables for geotechnical schemes.
4. Monitor so that all engineering and development activities result in schemes that are affordable and that meet programme requirements in a safe and environmentally responsible manner for time, cost, quality and safety.
5. Manage the development of suitable engineering options for a proposal so that full consideration is given to safety, reliability, operational capacity modelling, maintainability, ease of construction, and environmental/whole life issues. Engineering excellence is to be supported by:
a. Secure all relevant base data.
b. Review compliance with appropriate standards.
c. Using risk ID and evaluation methods (e.g. HAZOP, QRA, LRM, and the GK/RT/14200 suite), as suitable, to evaluate and compare options.
d. Using feedback from all relevant past projects across the UK rail network, lessons learned etc.
e. Keep designers up to date via training, briefings, CPD etc.
6. Maintain strict change control on scope development; evaluate cost, time, performance impacts and safety in conjunction with development management.
7. Participate in the selection of a single option for further development. Prepare or monitor preparation of reports, papers etc. as necessary.

Essential
• Experience in structural examination and specification of monitoring.
• Civil Engineering or Engineering Geology degree or equivalent industry-recognised training qualification.
• Membership or working towards membership of an appropriate professional institution (e.g. ICE, Geolsoc etc.).
• Sound technical capability and familiarity with current industry standards and software applications.
• Ability to clearly communicate technical detail to both a technical and non-technical audience.
• Experience of using software such as SLIDE, SETTLE 3D, WALLAP, etc.
• Experience in earthwork examination and specification of monitoring.
• Proficient in the application CDM Designer Duties.
• Understanding of environmental requirements of geotechnical schemes.
Desirable
• Membership of a relevant engineering professional institution (ICE or IStructE).
• Formal qualifications in risk identification and assessment.
• Experience of undertaking the role of Contractor Responsible Engineer (CRE) Civils
• Experience in ground investigation supervision, laboratory test scheduling and reporting.
• Design experience of basement design and tunnel/ground movement assessment
