Students' Union UCL is an organisation that exists to make more happen. UCL students have the potential to do anything, and the Union leads an essential role in helping to them achieve things they may never had thought possible. We are the representative body for University College London's (UCL) 38,000 students, one of the most diverse student communities in the world. As a charity employing over 90 full-time staff, we deliver a wide range of services and representative functions for students. The Head of Operations is a senior member of staff who has significant responsibilities and a major role to play in the operation and development of Students' Union UCL. They will have responsibility for all Union operations, ensuring that they are professional, consistent and built on a planning and project management culture. The right candidate will have an ability to plan long term but deliver change, being the go to person in regards to organisational projects and new initiatives. The purpose of the job is to keep Students' Union UCL moving forward and leading change, alongside the Chief Executive. The Head of Operations will lead the organisation's student services, which currently include our commercial services and provision of student activities. In total the Head of Operations departments will interact with over 20,000 students, volunteers, stakeholders and staff on a monthly basis. The Head of Operations role is to ensure that a high level of service is provided across the organisation, regardless of the type of service our members are accessing. The role will act as the organisations lead member of commercial staff, working strategically with a range of groups to significantly modernise UCLU's commercial offer, ensuring that they maximise surplus, operate efficiently and closely match the demand created by UCL's diverse demographic. The post holder will require a proven background of working with people to deliver modern, robust and exciting commercial services. The Head of Operations will make an important contribution to the wider work of Union ensuring that its people are a priority and work is set against the organisation's strategic direction. They will be an active member of the Leadership Team; will contribute to the setting and achievement of Union objectives; and will participate fully in discussions on the development of the organisation and policy of Union staff management and leadership. The Head of Operations will lead a significant number of central services, creating professional services that support our student services and interact positively with students and stakeholders. Key Requirements The ideal candidate will have significant practical operational and HR experience, significant financial management experience including responsibility for budgets of over GBP1m and of consistently working to and achieving challenging financial objectives, experience of working in a commercial environment, of driving sales, improving margins and exploiting new business opportunities, ability to operate in a complex environment, with the political skills and acumen to develop productive relationships with a wide range of stakeholders and command trust and confidence, ability to think corporately and strategically, to gain commitment and achieve results through others, sound judgment and the ability to handle competing priorities and a challenging workload in a pressurised environment.
