Right now we have an excellent opportunity for a leadership role reporting to the LST leader (Counsel).

We are seeking a professional legal individual would be able to demonstrate the ability to lead other legal workflow team members, work effectively with other team leaders as well as to participate and competently contribute to regular leadership meetings. In addition, you will possess a strong ability to effectively build and manage relationships and work independently (i.e. without supervision) with global clients (including clients in the UK, Europe, Canada and APAC/ JAPA) on a day to day basis.

It is essential that the candidate has a proven track record in leading, supervising and developing other professionals with various levels of experience. Further, it is strongly preferred that the candidate has cross jurisdiction experience, for example, in Europe and/or the APAC/JAPA region.

Key Responsibilities:

In this pivotal role you will contribute as an independent trusted legal advisor to clients in international GCO and business by:

  • identifying and effectively managing legal risk;
  • providing sound commercial legal advice and support across all business units including drafting, reviewing, analysing and negotiating a wide range of agreements and legal documents, including procurement, referral, partnership, customer and merchant incentive, distribution, sponsorship, marketing, online services, confidentiality, intercompany and retainer agreements and standard terms and conditions;
  • advising on customer complaints and related issues;
  • supporting internal governance and approval processes, including coordinating with compliance, risk, finance and other internal stakeholders as appropriate;
  • instructing and liaising with various outside counsels to obtain, challenge and finalise legal advice/ opinions on various projects, agreements and cross border issuance of cards
  • carrying out legal research;
  • reviewing and amending various internal and external servicing and marketing communications, company and product application forms; and
  • attending training courses as required.

Lead and supervise the work of other legal workflow team members, including:

  • coaching and mentoring direct reports;
  • promoting the success of direct reports by acknowledging and rewarding achievements;
  • identifying areas that need increased leadership focus;
  • implementing and improving methods for legal knowledge management;
  • contributing to LST's training and development programme;
  • ensuring LST's adherence to any company-wide and GCO-specific processes and procedures;
  • preparing and delivering internal training as required;
  • supporting budgeting and expenses control tasks; and performing other duties as assigned by the LST leader from time to time.

Offer of employment with American Express is conditioned upon the successful completion of a background verification check, subject to applicable laws and regulations.

  • Experience in leading, supervising and developing other legal professionals.
  • Cross jurisdiction experience, especially in Europe and APAC/JAPA region.
  • Ideally, a qualified solicitor (or equivalent qualification from a common law jurisdiction provided the candidate has experience advising on English law matters) with at least five years' post qualification experience, or alternatively a non-qualified professional with equivalent legal experience working in-house or in private practice.
  • Quality experience in advising on commercial contracts either in-house or in private practice.
  • Solid drafting, research and negotiation/influencing skills.
  • Solid analytical skills and high attention to detail.
  • Solid understanding of general principles of law applicable to commercial practice.
  • Intellectually strong with ability to rapidly grasp key issues.
  • Ability to work under time pressure to meet tight deadlines and clients' expectations.
  • Language skills desirable but not essential.

  • Strategic thinker with good business understanding and analytical skills.
  • Strong ability to build solid working relationships with employees, contractors and external parties.
