In a nutshell

Sainsbury's is a data rich business - with information collected from consumers, suppliers and colleagues. We believe that there is huge value in these data in driving value for our customers and, in turn, value for our shareholders. This role will, in a nutshell, lead a data modeling team to develop, update and improve data models in line with agreed ontology, artefacts, processes, standards and principles, ultimately to make great quality, well understood data available for reporting, analysis and insights. The fundamental principle is that data is a corporate asset and, as such, we need to manage and govern it in a way which creates value from that asset.
What I need to do
  • Triage new requirements, provide impact assessments and provide appropriate estimates for amending data models in line with solution designs and requirements
  • Make difficult trade-off decisions between commercial pace and architectural debt
  • Understand the complexity of the business and ensure the appropriate models are implemented by the team to create clarity and alignment
  • Provide strong leadership, direction and support for the data modeling team, including coaching and mentoring colleagues, developing capability within the team, managing workload and ensuring deliverables are met
  • Define and implement the framework, standards and principles for data modelling within the team
  • Provide technical expertise to the team
  • Develop and enhance business physical data models in line with new requirements
  • Develop and enhance data models for the Data and Analytics Centre of Excellence (DACE)
  • Work with Information Architects to enhance appropriate ontology (TOGAF or other), artefacts, toolsets, processes, principles and standards
  • Enhance the DACE data models and be their custodian, driving alignment as appropriate
  • Work with data management teams on the implementation of a new Data Dictionary
  • Balance resources between core strategic capability development and commercial solutions
  • Where appropriate, enable the de-commissioning of legacy data environments and associated data models
  • Create a great working relationship with all those involved in end to end solution design and development
  • Define and own modelling from a physical perspective on a day to day basis
  • Ensure data models developed within DACE meet appropriate standards and principles
  • Creation of solutions that meet business needs and move towards end state architecture
  • Prioritise and manage team workload and time to deliver tasks to agreed deadlines
  • Ensure data models are documented, communicated, updated and centrally managed in an appropriate manner
  • Acts as the escalation route for Data Modellers to help resolve issues

What I need to know
  • How to lead and influence a development and solution design community to deliver appropriate and high performance solutions
  • Clearly a very detailed knowledge of the frameworks, tools, technologies, skills and processes required for best practice data modelling
  • Detailed knowledge of the use of canonical data models, data lineage, data dictionaries and user metric guides
  • How information flows around a business, ideally with previous retail and digital experience
  • Detailed understanding of design and development of data stores and data warehouses and associated toolsets
  • Experience using and developing the Teradata Retail Data Model and using Erwin a bonus
  • How to optimise solutions for best performance in line with end user needs and use cases
  • Very strong knowledge of conceptual, logical and of physical, data modelling, ontology and solution design toolsets, methodologies and processes
  • Knowledge and experience working with of big-data, digital and open source capabilities technologies as well as more traditional solutions
  • An understanding of data modelling in the cloud/open source and the services available. Experience in a hybrid of on-prem and cloud is a plus
  • A detailed understanding of how to turn business requirements into information and data models
  • Strong understanding of the applications of data from operational use, reporting through to data science
