Job Introduction
BBC TV and Radio Engineering are looking for a talented and experienced Software Engineering Team Lead to join the Radio and Music team in West London.

The Radio and Music Engineering teams work alongside the BBC's television and radio networks to deliver innovative and exciting online experiences around some of the best audio and video content in the world. The team s are responsible for the Radio network homepages, BBC Music, music events and various tools and applications that enable and support the BBC's online offering for broadcast radio and music programming. We're a multidisciplinary team developing services for the web on AWS using PHP and Javascript, following software engineering best practice and working in a Scrum-based agile fashion shipping incrementally and often.

We're also part of the wider TV and Radio Engineering product group, which means you will be working alongside the teams responsible for making iPlayer and /programmes.

We're looking for a Software Engineering Team Lead who cares about creating performance and accessible applications, values communication and collaborative approaches to finding the right solution, and is willing and excited to learn new skills and share their knowledge with others. You'll be a part of a small team of engineers (4-5) and as Team Lead you'll be responsible for supporting and developing your team.

Role Responsibility
Alongside Technical Architects, shape and develop the BBC's strategy around 'listening'.
  • Advise product managers and project managers on the complexities of planned work, including providing time and resource estimates in the planning of projects
  • Learn new technologies in monthly hack-days and apply your learning to projects where appropriate
  • On occasion you may be asked to assist the BBC's frontline technology support teams in coping with user problems which are specific to Radio and Music Services, including attendance on out-of-hours conference calls which are scheduled to support on-air activities

The Ideal Candidate

You'll need the following skills to be a productive member of the team:
  • Experience of developing with Javascript on the front and back-end - ideally using Node and React
  • Experience of building responsive websites with HTML and CSS and using an ideology of progressive enhancement
  • Experience of unit testing (we use PHPUnit and Mocha)
  • An understanding of how to debug cross-browser compatibility issues
  • Familiarity with version control systems (we use Git)
  • Experience with AWS and CloudFormation templates
  • Understanding of Continuous Integration and build systems (we use Jenkins)
  • Experience of managing a team of software engineers
  • A willingness to learn new technologies and tools and share you learn with the wider team

  • Experience of writing PHP, using frameworks such as Symfony, Laravel and Silex
  • Experience of CSS preprocessors (we use Sass)
  • Experience of Styleguide driven-development for front-end components
