The CWU represents members in the postal, telecoms and financial services sectors, in companies including Royal Mail, the Post Office, BT, Telefonica UK, and Santander. The CWU is the fifth largest affiliate to the Labour Party and politics is a key element of the union's work.

The post of Political Advisor will report to the Head of Political Strategy in the General Secretary's Office and help implement the Union's political strategy, with a particular focus on influencing parliamentarians and the Labour Party and supporting CWU members in becoming politically active and standing for office.

You will have knowledge and experience of parliamentary procedures and of how to influence parliamentarians; a thorough understanding of the Labour Party and its selection procedures for candidates; and knowledge of current issues facing the CWU and wider labour movement.

You will have a good honours degree or equivalent and have excellent verbal and written communication skills. In addition you will have a good understanding of the union's campaigns and the ability to think strategically, working independently and managing your own workload. Maintaining relationships with parliamentarians will be key to this role along with the ability to pro-actively identify opportunities to influence parliamentary business in driving the CWU's political strategy forward.
